Salt and light of the world part 1

Previously we discussed that there is an ongoing battle between light and darkness and ultimately, light will win just as when you open your lights at night, it drives away darkness in the room. A basic way to gain understanding how best

we can truly become the light of the world, is by examining the Scriptures which Jesus used to teach the people about being lights. It is imperative that if we want to properly understand what the Lord is doing right now, and how we can join Him in this move, we must go back to what He has told His disciples eons ago,

In Matthew 5:13-16, the Lord encourages us to be the light that He designed us to be,

You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how will it be made salty again? It is good for nothing anymore, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men. “You are the light of the world.

A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. “Nor do men light a lamp, and put it under the peck-measure, but on the lampstand; and it gives light to all who are in the house.”

Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

The nature of light

Jesus mentioned that we are the light of the world. To be a light is no other than to be sharp and shining. What do I mean by this? If you open the window at night, you will see that light drives out the darkness. It is not the darkness that can pierce the light but the light simply removes the darkness. In today’s world one cannot go on without the help of the Lord. To be a burning lamp one needs the Lighter and the Fuel. Who can be that except the Lord Himself. Since the release of the humanist movement, men have been drawn into increasing independence from the Lord.

This radical departure is pride of the greatest measure. It means we think that we know how to run this world without the Maker and we know how to rule well without His wisdom. In Physics, light has a dual character, as a wave and as a particle which is why it consists of photons or subatomic particles and can bend. This duality of light explains the

typology of the light of the church, some flickers, others burn like torch while others more have been snuffed out. A blackhole for example is a massive star that collapsed inwardly sucking everything within including its own light, and its blackness could still be felt whenever another object passing by nearby is sucked into it. Likewise those who do not walk in the light that they have been given will suck others into their depravity and delusion. Those who backslide will truly blackslide.

Disasters and the signs of the times

The increasing disasters that we are witnessing at massive scales which was not even imagined or projected in the last century proves the point that we are living at the end of the age. This age is ending and we are living at the dawn of a new age when Jesus Christ will rule the earth. The Bible tells us that the end of the age is the reaping of everything that was sown by man (Matthew 13:39). The main reason why many increasing disasters are heaped upon us during these days is because we are reaping all things sown by man on earth. This reaping includes the good and the bad because man has eaten of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil; it is evident that throughout all the ages we see man doing good and at the same time sowing evil.

But more than being bound in this nature of the old creature, the Lord provided a way out by bringing the New Creation in the midst of the old and perishing through the cross of Jesus. Just as we view this cross and repent of our sins by looking back, those who lived in the Old Covenant viewed the cross of Jesus through prophecy and both are saved who did trust in the cross of the Lord because His sacrifice is the point of convergence in history. Therefore we are not to be afraid of what will happen during these days but be prepared because all things will happen fast…they will take place rapidly (Revelation 1:3).

When the disciples asked the Lord for signs of the times, and the signs of the age, the Lord replied See to it that no one misleads you. Deception is one mark of this age, and as we draw even closer to the end of it, we will find that increasingly, men will be deceived because of lack of love for truth (2 Thessalonians 2:10) and following their selfish ends, they will be destroyed without remedy (see 2 Thessalonians 2:12; 2 Timothy 3:1-9). Because of these trends in this age, we are called to be even more alert, wise and bold so that we can shine the light that we have been given. As we have been discussing, light is needed and essential if we want to walk in the straight and narrow path.

Team ministries

No one who walks in the light will stumble and fall, but those who walk in darkness will continue to be deceived, bound and perish in their folly. One reason why the Lord also deals with us as the Church is because there will be a body before the end of this age that will be spotless and blameless who will walk in truth, purity and love without being ashamed of the gospel or even timid about it. They will use divinely powerful weapons that can even make the vessels of darkness fled in horror or be converted because of the cross of Jesus. I am not talking here of the reinstitution of the crusades, rather, these men and women of God will walk in such glory that even their enemies will see them as lights indeed called by God to proclaim freedom to the captives and light to those in the dark. In order to receive and possess the promises of God for the end of the age, the end time ministries will not move alone nor will be found as isolated workers. They will move as one body together with a team of ministries to fulfill the prayer of Jesus that they may be one.

Shining glory

Given the command that we are to be salt and light of the earth, it is also necessary that we understand just what it means to be light and what it means to be salt of the earth. In the King James Version, Jesus said “Ye are the salt of the earth…Ye are the light of the world.” When the Lord was speaking these pronouncements, He was not speaking only to a handful of disciples such as Peter, James and John but to all His disciples. This implies a body of disciples who will fulfil this call and not only individuals. They will actually shine His light. It is quite hard to be alone and fight against the tide of darkness, though one plus the Lord can do much, when there is a necessity that others are absent for the task. Even so, the call is for many who will become lights that will shine as the stars above the heavens when the Lord comes back. One way that we can gain understanding and strengthen the light that we have is by understanding and studying those who previously held torches and movements in the past.

These men and women of God walked with the Light of the world and shone brightly as the Morning Star amidst the doom and gloom of their times. They are not any different from us, except that the Lord has His special grace for the end times for the sake of the summing up of the Kingdom and the ages; which is why it is special. There is nothing special about the vessels but the glory is, because the Lord is returning to His Temple and He will not abide in a broken temple (read the books of Ezra, Haggai, Nehemiah and Malachi). The latter glory will be greater than the former one because the Lord will shine His light. Indeed God is sovereign in this but at the same time, He calls for people and vessels who are willing to stand in the gap to be His hands and feet to reach out into this world. As He has said, He did not come to condemn the world, but through His righteousness and life, to call the world into repentance that it might gain true life.
