You teach me in the night seasons

I will bless the Lord who has counseled me; indeed, my mind instructs me in the night. (Psalm 16:7)

David writes here that the Lord gives instruction even in the night seasons. It is an amazing facet of the ministry of David the prophetic psalmist that God speaks to him even in dreams and visions as he has said. The Psalms in the Bible is a testimony to his heart meditations and hearing the songs of heaven. Even this talent was imparted to Solomon who wrote 3000 proverbs and 1005 songs (1 Kings 4:32). When we are asleep, the Lord can bypass our soulish minds and speak to our spirit either in dreams, visions or revelations. This is a controversial area in the Church today because many have relegated the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the body of Christ to be past in character therefore we have the book (Scriptures) as the sole authority only. While it is true that the Scripture is the sole authority this does not mean that the Holy Spirit went ahead of the coming of Jesus. He was sent here for us!

The lack of openness and narrow vision of how the Lord works or how His Holy Spirit works has made us all blind to what He has in store for us. While the book outlines everything even of what is coming, it is a close book without the guidance and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to the reader. Jesus said that He has sent the Spirit of Truth to teach us all things! And that should also include even teaching us things to come, things to understand, things to remember etc. It is in this regard that those who have closed their minds to the workings of the Holy Spirit have lowered their visions and faith to their doctrines and creeds and traditions without even heeding the advice of the Lord Jesus to the Pharisees, “ye do err not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God!”

Without the Holy Spirit, how can there be regeneration and renewal of the new man? How can there be newness of life? How can there be joy? When we make the Holy Spirit a doctrine rather than to be experienced and revered, we put ourselves to a class of beggars. There is so much in the Table of God that He wants to give to His children but this comes by revelation that is discerned through the Holy Spirit and not merely by the book. Can this be why in Psalms 78:2-3 and in Proverbs 1:6 it is stated that He will utter dark sayings?

I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old: Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.

To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.

When the Word of God speaks about dark sayings, these means things that are not easy to understand, things that are not clearly revealed, things too difficult for our own interpretation. These things need revelation which our minds could not comprehend easily. That is why Paul prayed for the Ephesian church that their eyes of understanding would be enlightened and they will understand their call, and the richness of their spiritual inheritance in Christ Jesus. He was saying in effect that, you are rich in every spiritual blessings in the heavenlies because you are in Christ, who is blessed.

When the Lord opens a dark saying, it is like having a hidden treasure brought before your eyes. Even if I have visions, if I do not have understanding of them they become useless for edification unless the Lord tells me what it means. This makes it important for believers to not just know that God can speak through the Scriptures but that He can speak in a variety of ways. It means, God can be experienced personally apart from the reading of His Word. When the Lord shows me a vision, or a dream in the eyes of my heart, I write it down praying for understanding when I do not know it or I simply rejoice and bless God if I know. God intends that we all grow continually like a tree planted firmly in His Word as well as His Spirit. When we don’t grow in both, we become imbalanced and much more a persecutor like Saul of the succeeding generation.

The Scriptures above clearly indicate that God can speak to us even in our beds, even when we are asleep or simply mulling His words. God is too big to be placed in our theological boxes or pulpits of comfort and say He lives here; or that He only do these things. When our doctrines limit Him, we indeed make Him very small who is very Big, who has declared that the earth was only His footstool.

God could not even be contained by the Universe! He is still the same uncreated God yesterday, today and forever. He still makes the apple fall to the ground, the Sun to rise early in the sky and the stars and moon to shine upon us in the night. He still fills us with the Holy Spirit to overflowing so we can serve Him and be a blessing. This God could not be put in our cozy traditions and imaginations of Him, for who are we to say to Him who has made us, why are you like this, or why do you do this?
